Best friend blanket

El pasado mes de febrero en este post os contaba que estaba haciendo una manta a medias con mi mejor amiga. Me autoplagio para contaros en qué consiste:

"Estamos haciendo una manta para cada una pero entre las dos, es decir: yo hago la mitad de los cuadrados de cada manta (haciendo dos cuadrados de cada combinación de colores) y ella hace lo mismo. Cada una hace un diseño distinto de cuadrado. Cuando nos veamos de nuevo (vivimos lejos :( ) nos intercambiaremos los cuadraditos y los uniremos. Al final cada una tendrá una manta hecha entre las dos. No sé explicarlo muy bien así por escrito, espero que pilléis la idea más o menos."

Bueno, pues al final terminamos todos los cuadrados y nos los intercambiamos, allá por julio por fin comencé a unir los cuadrados. Por supuesto cuando iba por la mitad me quedé sin lana y tardé como mes y medio en conseguir más, pero por fin a finales del pasado mes de octubre la terminé (mi amiga aún está ello, está bastante más ocupada que yo... pero seguro que cuando la termine estará preciosa).

Last February I was telling you on this post about the blanket I've been making along with my best friend. On my own words:

We are making two blankets together (one for each of us): I make half the squares for both of us (two of each color combination) and so does she but with a different pattern. It's not easy to explain in writing, I hope you'll manage to get the idea. We are using the same yarn, so now I have all these grannies (x2) and as soon as we meet again (we live apart :( ) we can exchange our squares and begin to join them. In the end we'll have similar blankets made by both of us.

We did finish all the squares and exchanged them, mid July I started joining them but, as it usually happens, I just run out of yarn when I was half way though; it took my about a month an a half to get more yarn but finally by the end of October I finished my blanket (my friend's still working on it since she's much busier than me, but it'll look gorgeous at the end too for sure).

Os cuento un poco. Los dos modelos de cuadradito son por un lado el granny square de toda la vida y por otro un granny con centro de margarita o redondo, el patrón lo sacamos de aquí. Y la lana que usamos fue la Merino Classic de Katia y el ganchillo de 4.00mm aunque creo que para esta lana es mejor un 5.00 para que quede más sueltita y blandita al final la manta.

Let me tell you a bit about the blanket. The two patterns we used for the squares were the regular classic granny square on the one hand and on the other this daisy square pattern. We used Katia Merino Classic yarn and a 4.00mm hook although I recommend a larger hook for this yarn after working with it, a 5.00mm would be nice.

Teníamos siete colores para los cuadrados y los hicimos de forma que al final tuviéramos el mismo número de cuadrados de cada color en la fila exterior, 20 de cada (20 con el exterior azul, 20 con el exterior amarillo, etc.); es decir 140 cuadrados distintos de cada diseño (140 grannies y 140 margaritas) cada una. Por lo tanto cada manta tiene en total 280 cuadrados que repartimos en 20 filas de 14 cuadrados cada una.

Yo los repartí alternando un granny con una margarita y colocando los colores también de forma alterna, cada fila tenía un granny y una margarita de cada color (siempre tomando el color exterior como referencia) en la misma secuencia. Sería algo así (dónde G es un granny y F una margarita/flor:

We had seven colours for the squares and made them so that in the end we'd have the same amount of squares of each colour (as in the last row colour), 20 of each (20 with blue exterior, 20 with white, 20 with green and so on). We ended up with 140 squares of each design (x2, 140 grannies and 140 daisies each of us). That is, at the end each of us had 280 squares that we placed in 20 rows of 14 columns each.

I placed them alternating one granny and one daisy and placing the colours in an ordered randomness if that makes sense. Each row has a granny and a daisy of each colour (third row) in the same sequence. It should be clearer with the following drawing (where G is a granny and F is a flower/daisy).

Para unir los cuadrados usé un tono beige de la misma lana (Katia Merino Classic) y la técnica de unir seguido de manera continua (continuous join as you go) de Baby Love Brand, es la primera vez que usaba esta técnia y sin duda no será la última, el no tener que rematar nada y ver como va creciendo la manta sin tener que detenerte en cada cuadro me ganó completamente.

To join the squares I used a beige colour from the same yarn (Katia Merino Classic) and used the continuous join as you go technique by Baby Love Brand, it was the first time I used it and I'll definitely will use it again, I love not having to weave any ends but two and been able to keep working and seeing how the blanket grows.

Una vez unidos los 280 cuadrados hice una fila más de borde del mismo color de unión y luego una fila de punto granny de cada color de los cuadrados, para acabar usé el mismo tono de unión y el borde en doble V de Bunny Mummy.

Once I joined all the 280 squares I made on more row around it all in the same colour and the one row of each colour in granny groups, and for the edge I used the joining colour and made a double V edging by Bunny Mummy.

¡Y eso es todo! Espero que más o menos quede claro, sé que es un poco lioso el tema de la manta a medias y no se me da muy bien explicarlo así por escrito así que si tenéis cualquier duda preguntad en los comentarios e intentaré ayudaros lo mejor que pueda :).

Yo estoy encantada con mi mantita hecha a medias con mi mejor amiga, este invierno sé que la voy a disfrutar mucho no sólo por lo bonita y agradable que es si no por la historia que lleva detrás y que representa.

Winter is coming

Hace un par de meses me compré un ganchillo grande, de 10mm, por que tenía ganas de hacer algo que creciera enseguida y se terminara rapidito, con las cinco (creo, ya he perdido la cuenta) mantas que tengo en proceso me apetecía terminar algo en uno o dos días. Así que me compé mi súper ganchillo, cogí uno de Clover de la serie Amure (o Amour según la página) y así además los probaba que me tienta mucho pillarme un pack de los normales (de 2.00 a 6.00 mm).

Una vez tuve mi súper ganchillo tocó buscar la lana, quería algo súper gordito con la misma idea de que se hiciera rápido, estuve mirando lanas, merinos, pero las que tenían el grosor necesario picaban mucho, y como mi idea era hacer un cuello/bufanda pues como que no me atraía la idea de querer arrancarme el cuello al minuto de ponérmelo. Al final, un poco reticente, compré tres ovillos de Katia Canada (reticente porque no soy muy de acrílico y menos para prendas) y lo cierto es que, si bien no tiene la suavidad de un tejido natural, el acabado es muy bonito y no parece acrílico para nada, yo creo que puede pasar por lana perfectamente.

A couple of months ago I bought a super large crocher hook (10mm) I wanted to make something fast in one or two days since my (I think) five blankets in the process were enough unfinished projects to have at one time. So I got Clover Amour (or Amure) hook in 10mm since I wanted to try this series anyway (I might get the 9 set of the regular ones 2.00mm to 6.00mm).

For the yarn I wanted something big and chunky but soft, I looked some wool and merino yarns but the ones big enough were pretty scratchy and I didn't feel like getting a rash in the first five minutes of wearing my cowl. So I finally got Katia Canada (even if I'm not usually very fond of acrylic, not for wearables any way), it doesn't feel like acrylic, it's not über soft but it's comfortable to wear and I love the chunky and snuggly finish.

Ya con mi lana y mi ganchillo tocó buscar un patrón. Desde hace tiempo tenía fichados los cuellos de All About Amy así que me puse a mirar los patrones que tenía (todos preciosos) y me decidí por el Chunky Double Crochet Cowl, me gusta el estilo sencillo y creo que al ser tan grande y gordo el punto le da un acabado distinto. Que no me quería complicar mucho, vaya.

Once I had my hook and my yarn it was time to look for a pattern, I had been lurking All About Amy's cowl patterns for a while and finally decided to make the Chunky Double Crochet Cowl since it was simple and with the large yarn looked really nice. I said that I wanted it to be fast right?

El patrón está en inglés pero es muy sencillo, casi con ver las fotos del cuello acabado se saca, yo hice 60 cadenas para empezar, cada fila consiste en 1pa 1ca (el punto alto en el espacio de la cadena de la fila anterior) y se trabaja en redondo; yo hice 15 filas en total (en el patrón eran 13 pero me apetecía un poco más alto). En total tardé una hora y media más o menos.

It's a nice and easy pattern even if you are a beginner, I made the whole cowl in an hour in a half more or less.

Ahora que parece que por fin ha llegado algo de fresco espero poder estrenarlo y seguiré en busca de lanas gordas y suaves para hacer más cuellos con mi súper ganchillo. ¿Sugerencias para lanas así?.

Now that it finally seems to be getting cooler I expect to wear it very soon. I'm also still in the search of big chunky snuggly non-scratchy yarns to make some more cowls with my super hook. Any yarn ideas?
